new health and safety scope documents released by Ministry
The Scope and Sequence documents for Health and Safety including Health and Safety in Kindergarten to Grade 8 and Health and Safety in Grades 9 to 12 have been posted on the Ministry of Education website http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/curriculum/elementary/healthandsafety.html and http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/curriculum/secondary/healthandsafety.html for school boards, schools and other education stakeholders. No print copies will be created by the ministry. These Scope and Sequence educator resource guides support the goal of Ensuring Equity-from Achieving Excellence: A Renewed Vision for Education in Ontario, 2014, specifically Promoting Well Being and Enhancing Public Confidence. The new Health and Safety Scope and Sequence of Expectations (2017) also supports other Ontario Health and Safety initiatives including the Student Injury Prevention Initiative, the Science Teachers’ Association of Ontario (STAO) Fire Safety resource, and Ontario Council for Technology Education (OCTE) OCTElab and Safedocs.
In addition, the Scope and Sequence documents highlight the importance of understanding and meeting workplace safety regulatory requirements for students, such as mandatory worker health and safety awareness requirements (www.ontario.ca/learntoworksafe) and working at heights training. They also help to inform the Ministry of Labour’s ongoing efforts to ensure a strong foundation of health and safety knowledge and skills exists for young workers. If you have any questions about these resource guide documents, please contact the appropriate Regional Office for information. Thank you for your ongoing support of the Ministry’s curriculum review process.
